Ethnic Minorities- Stereotypes
Negative- Storyville- India's Daughter
This documentary is focused on a famous gang rape case that took place on a bus in Delhi in 2012. The documentary talks about the life of the girl and how her life was cut short when she was attacked on her way home from the cinema. The men who raped her were young Indian men who believed that it was justified because a woman should not be out at that time. This creates a negative representation of Indian men because they are shown as dangerous as they have murdered a young woman and assaulted her male friend. They are continued to be shown as dangerous when footage of her parents talking about their daughter is shown, by repeatedly showing a positive side to the girl it makes us biased towards the girl who lost her life. They also use statistics in the voice over to convince us that Indian men are dangerous when they say that " A woman is raped in India every 20 minutes."This shocks the audience into feeling that India is a bad place for women and paints all of the Indian men as rapists. They construct the scene by then placing this footage next to footage of Indian women protesting against the violence that the men commit against women, It then uses mise en scene to show Indian men as dangerous by showing the men flipping cars over as well as knocking the women to the ground and beating them , this further proves that some of the men act this way towards the women and adds to the stereotype of the danger they bring. The Hypodermic needle method is used to create a negative view on males and the power they have over the females as the girl's parents talk about the fact that male babies are celebrated and the female babies are not. When the outside of the jail is shown non diegetic music that sounds negative is used to how us that we are about to see one of the rapists. Editing is used to create a juxtaposition between the positivity of her family to the negativity of her rapist saying that females are responsible for rape more than males.
